Raised or hypertrophic scars can be uncomfortable and very noticeable on the skin. While normal scar tissue forms flush with the surrounding skin, hypertrophic scars leave behind darker, raised tissue within the border of the wound. If you have a raised scar, Dallas Facial Plastic Surgery Center offers hypertrophic scar removal treatments at our clinic in Irving, TX.

Hypertrophic scars form when an over production of collagen occurs during the healing process. It is common for scars to start as raised, then shrink to become flush with the surrounding skin. With hypertrophic scarring, the scar does not flatten, remaining raised. In some cases, a keloid scar can form, which is a type of hypertrophic scar that continues to grow larger and outside of the borders of the original wound.

A hypertrophic scar can occur from any type of wound to the skin. Cuts, burns, infections and even small piercings in the nose, lip or ear can produce a hypertrophic or a keloid scar. Treatment for regular hypertrophic scarring is different than keloid scar removal, as keloids can grow back after they are removed.

Removing Raised Scars

Smoothing raised scars can be accomplished through a few different methods. There are non-surgical treatments that can be used to resurface the skin and remove the extra scar tissue. Laser skin treatments, dermabrasion techniques and silicone sheet treatments may be effective to help remove hypertrophic scars. For large or disfiguring raised scars, surgical scar revision may be required.

Dr. Stefan Shuaib is a respected, experienced facial plastic surgeon with a double board certification in Facial Plastic Surgery and in Head and Neck Surgery. His surgical and aesthetic skills have benefited many patients living with undesirable hypertrophic scars. If you have raised scar tissue you want removed, Dr. Shuaib can recommend the best solution to restore smoother skin.

While no scar can be completely removed scar tissue always remains, but they can be made less visible. To learn more about hypertrophic scarring treatments, contact us at Dallas Facial Plastic Surgery Center in Irving, TX, to book a raised scar removal consultation with Dr. Stefan Shuaib.
