Rhinophyma is a type of rosacea that affects the skin and tissue on the nose. Individuals with rhinophyma can experience thicker, bumpy skin on the nose, which can be disfiguring. Over time, the nose can appear larger and more bulbous. At Dallas Facial Plastic Surgery Center, we offer rhinophyma treatment to remove damaged skin and restore a more attractive nose shape.

What Causes Rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma occurs in some people who have rosacea, an inflammatory skin condition. It is more common in men than women, but it can impact any gender. The most common group of people to experience rhinophyma are Caucasian men between the ages 50 to 70. This condition affects the skin on the nose – the sebaceous glands become enlarged and create bumpy, red skin on the nose. Over time, the skin becomes thicker and bumpier, which can disfigure the nose shape, creating a bulbous appearance.

Rhinophyma does not cause health problems, but it does change the face and nose appearance. Since the nose is the upfront and center feature on the face, a bumpy, red appearance is distracting. The nose can continue to become more deformed as the condition worsens. To restore a more attractive appearance, cosmetic treatments or surgery may be the best solution.

Nosing Reshaping After Rhinophyma

Rhinophyma is believed to be caused by years of untreated rosacea, but the exact cause of the condition is not known. There are medications that can be used for rosacea and rhinophyma treatment, but these will not undo the aesthetic damage to the nasal skin and tissue. To reshape the nose, the thick, bumpy skin must be excised or resurfaced.

Laser treatments and dermabrasion are non-surgical options for reshaping a nose damaged by rhinophyma. For severe cases, rhinoplasty may be considered for excising the skin and reshaping the nose. Dr. Stefan Shuaib is a double board certified facial plastic surgeon who can evaluate patients with rhinophyma and discuss the best cosmetic procedure to restore a more attractive nose appearance.
